While the Playstation 4 may have launched with a rather small lineup, this holiday season has certainly boasted the console's roster. From November through early December we saw the release of several triple-a titles, including: Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, Call of Duty Black Ops 3, Just Cause 3, and Rainbow Six: Siege. All of which are notably a part of established franchises with huge fanbases making it hard to decide which the the best PS4 game for you.
Picking just one of these games is really more than just a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of what kind of gaming experience you are looking for. While games like Battlefront, Black Ops 3, and Rainbow Six: Siege may very well offer the bestin terms of multiplayer, they certainly lack in the depth of their single player experiences. Battlefront and Rainbow Six: Siege not only lack this depth but have a complete absence of a single player campaign. Black Ops 3 on the other hand does include a single player campaign however, the real focus of the franchise is clearly the multiplayer. This is in contrast to games like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 in which, at least at this time, currently offer no forms of online play. Their experiences rely in their rich open worlds and freedom to explore these worlds as you choose.
If you’re seeking competitive multiplayer experience and working as a team to complete objectives then these aren’t really the two choices for you. Sure Fallout 4 offers companions, A.I. players that assist you, but it can really hardly be compared to the real experience of playing with another person. When breaking it down into the two categories we can really truly start to appreciate the games intended purpose, and determine which game is the best for each.
So which of the multiplayer titles is the best? The simplest way to begin judging the category would be in sheer replay value, in which one of these games certainly lacks. Multiplayer games are often best enjoyed with a lot of variety. The same objectives on the same maps over and over again can get very repetitive, which is why many games release downloadable content to keep a fresh feel. This is fine when a game is released as a full multiplayer experience with the downloadable content serving simply as additional maps, weapons, etc. The problem with Star Wars Battlefront is that it not only lacks any form of a story but also the multiplayer, its main focus, is currently limited to roughly five maps and a few game modes that all ultimately feel the same. I am sure in time with new content this will improve but it still is very lacking in its current state.
Between Black Ops 3 and Rainbow Six: Siege it’s really a tough call, but in terms of its replay and judging by that Black Ops 3 really is the best games in terms of its multiplayer experience. Not only is it the most well crafted and innovative game in the franchise it also includes modes like its infamous “Zombies” mode which in itself feels like its own game. Plus it’s the only game of the three that even bothered to think some people may enjoy a story mode.
Now the question of the best for a single player experience? Well that is certainly not Black Ops 3, as stated its focus is multiplayer, and quite frankly it is not Just Cause 3. While Just Cause 3 like the other games in the franchise is destructive open world fun, it lacks the depth of some of its competition like Fallout 4. Gamers have spent hundreds of hours simply exploring its vast world, building their settlements, and completing the games seemingly limitless quests. All of which Just Cause 3 is just simply lacking in comparison.
While all of this is of course a matter of opinion if you’re looking for a game that is going to give you value for your money Fallout 4 and Black Ops 3 will give you that and more. As with any console though the best PS4 game will change as the lineup will continue to expand throughout 2016 and beyond.
